Wei Yuan was a great Chinese thinker from Shaoyang, Hunan province. He moved to Yangzhou in 1831, where he lived for the rest of his life.Wei cared about the dangerous situation of China in the early 19th century.
From an early age, Wei supported the New Text school of Confucianism(儒家思想)and became a member of the statecraft school, which supported practical learning. Wei called for sea transport of food to the capital instead of using the Grand Canal. In order to deal with the demographic crisis(人口危机)in China, Wei also suggested that lots of Han Chinese moye into Xinjiang.
Later in his life he became more and more worried about the danger from the western countries. He wrote many famous books. Today, he is mostly known for his work, Illustrated Treatise on the Maritime Kingdoms(海国图志),which has Western material collected by Lin Zexu.
